Who We Are
Safe Spaces 4 Sexual Health is a paid Johns Hopkins University research study to improve the sexual health of gay, bisexual and other men who use mobile apps to meet other men for dating, relationships, and sex in Baltimore.
The Process
On the Van:
When you first get on the van, you'll answer a few questions on a computer to see if you're eligible for the study. If you are, a navigator will explain the informed consent. If you agree to participate, you'll fill out a private survey about your health, behaviors, and sexual health. Everyone who completes the survey gets a $50 debit card.
After the survey, you can choose to get HIV and STI testing. For each test you take (HIV, chlamydia/gonorrhea, or syphilis), you'll get a $10 debit card. After the tests, you'll get your preliminary HIV result and schedule a follow-up appointment with a navigator to discuss your final results. You can also refer up to 3 people to the study, earning $10 for each referral who joins.
Post Van Follow-up:
Once you finish the van visit, you'll be randomly placed in one of two follow-up programs:
Arm A: Weekly virtual visits with a navigator for up to 6 weeks to help you find medical care and prevention services.
Arm B: You’ll get an information packet with local clinic referrals, and if you're newly diagnosed, you'll get support for care.
After 6 weeks, the navigator will check in to see if you’ve scheduled and attended a medical appointment. You can also take part in an exit interview to share your experience and receive a $50 debit card.
Don’t worry about remembering all the details now. A navigator on the van will explain everything, so you can decide if you want to participate.
