Safe Spaces and Places is a paid Johns Hopkins University research study to improve the sexual health of gay, bisexual and other men who use mobile apps to meet other men for dating, relationships and sex in Baltimore.

We offer these sexual health services free of charge on our mobile van...

HIV SCREENING

HIV testing will be conducted by HIV counselors in a private room on our mobile van. Results will be delivered within 1 minute and, for positive rapid tests, a phlebotomist will collect a blood sample to send out for confirmatory results. Everyone who is tested for HIV will receive a gift card.

CHLAMYDIA AND GONORRHEA SCREENING

Men will collect their own samples for oral, anal, and/or penile chlamydia and gonorrhea testing using  self-collection swabs.  Everyone who is tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea will receive a gift card.

SYPHILIS SCREENING

A phlebotomist will collect blood for syphilis testing in a private room on our mobile van. Everyone who is tested for syphilis will receive a gift card.

TREATMENT

All samples will go to the Baltimore City Health Department for testing. The health department will contact any one who tests positive for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and/or syphilis to provide treatment resources

RESOURCES

A health navigator will be on board to help with PrEP, PEP, DoxyPEP, and HIV Care referrals. They will also have information on other resources you may need like housing, food, mental health, etc.

Complete a survey to help us reduce the burden of HIV in our community...

On the van, you may be asked  to complete an anonymous, electronic survey related to your personal characteristics, sexual behaviors, sexual health and other health related behaviors. The results of this survey will be used to develop HIV prevention programs to reduce new infections in the gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men who are most affected by HIV in Baltimore.

  • This survey is voluntary.
  • You may still receive any and all of our sexual health screening services decline to do the survey.
  • You may skip any question you are uncomfortable with answering while doing the survey.
  • Everyone who completes the survey will be given a $50 debit card.

No need to stress about remembering all of this right now! A research assistant on the mobile van will be happy to tell you more about the survey so that you can give your informed consent if you choose to participate.
